What does it mean, how did that get designated, and is it any safer for us?" So did my colleague here at WGBH News, reporter Craig LeMoult, who was reminded of something that has long piqued his and his wife’s curiosity. All DOD OCD issue signs have "Not To Be Reproduced Or Used Without Department Of Defense Permission." at the bottom of the sign.When I heard the recent news about the false emergency alert in Hawaii that warned a ballistic missile was incoming, my first reaction was, "That’s terrifying," followed quickly by, "What would I do if I got an alert message like that?" Perhaps you had a similar reaction. The Fallout Shelter Sign Posting Handbook lists the FS 1 as an exterior sign and the FS 2 as an interior sign but both were posted on the exteriors of buildings with shelters. ![]() Both had flat black and yellow reflective paint. The two most common signs were the FS1, which was a 14 by 20 inch aluminum sign, and the FS2 which was a 10 by 14 inch galvanized steel sign. ![]() Public fallout shelters were marked by distinctive signs. Directed by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and supervised by Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) and the US Army Corps of Engineers, work was done under contract by local architect-engineer firms. In December 1961 the US Department of Defense announced the initiation of the National Fallout Shelter Survey (NFSS) to identify, license, mark with distinctive signs, and stock with essential food and other supplies suitable public fallout shelter space in existing structures, mines, caves, and tunnels throughout the United States. These signs were never used, and have been in storage since they were made in the early 1960s. These original US fallout shelter signs are made of galvanised steel, painted in a flat, reflective paint.
